Abstract

The English NHS Diabetic Eye Screening Programme aims to lower the risk of sight loss in diabetics by detecting and treating sight-threatening diabetic retinopathy early in the disease process. Key components were needed to conduct evidence-based, population-based screening programs. To reach the most diabetics, the eligible population must be identified. Capable clinical and non-clinical professionals engage in recognized Continuous Professional Development and Quality Assurance programs to deliver and support the program. Screen-positive patients might be referred for ophthalmology therapy and retinal examination with unsatisfactory pictures. Those who are screen positive should additionally examine their diabetes management. The service includes audits and internal and external quality assurance. All diabetics over 12 in England get two-field mydriatic digital photography screening yearly. Beginning in 2003, the initiative covered all of England by 2008. The 2015–16 program uptake was 82.8%, with 2.59 million diabetics given screening and 2.14 million tested. Diabetic retinopathy/maculopathy is no longer the major cause of certifiable blindness in working-age England because to the program.
