Abstract

In order to provide boundary requirements for examining the phenomena from the standpoint of organizational change, we present a comprehensive evaluation of the vast, varied, and dispersed literature on digital transformation (DT) in this article. We provide a multifaceted framework that synthesizes the existing knowledge on DT based on 279 publications, and we identify two significant theme patterns: DT is pushing businesses toward flexible organizational structures that provide ongoing adaptation; this trend is fueled by and integrated into digital business ecosystems. Four viewpoints on the phenomena of DT are derived from these two patterns: systemic change, segmented adaptation, technological influence, and holistic co-evolution. By connecting our results and interpretations to previous research, we discover that traditional frameworks on organizational transformation only address a portion of the nature of DT. We construct a research agenda and provide management implications for strategy and organizational transformation based on this approach.
