Abstract

This systematic study examines how sustainable materials are chosen and used in building design and construction, focusing on their environmental, economic, and social implications. Following the PRISMA standards, this evaluation examined fifty relevant papers published between 2010 and 2023. The results indicate that sustainable materials, such as recycled steel, bamboo, and low-carbon concrete, demonstrably mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, and resource exhaustion when contrasted with conventional materials. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was vital for analyzing these environmental advantages.

Although the initial prices of sustainable materials are frequently greater, their long-term financial benefits, such as lower operating expenditures, energy savings, and decreased maintenance costs, make them a financially sound investment. The rising demand for these commodities is slowly driving down their prices, according to market trends. Sustainable materials, when used in a social context, improve indoor air quality, minimize health concerns related to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and promote the well-being of those who use them. This approach also encourages community involvement by supporting local businesses. Despite these advantages, issues exist, notably regarding the availability and affordability of sustainable materials in developing areas. The review's conclusion is that solving these challenges needs continuing technology improvements, government support, and stronger regulations to encourage the use of sustainable construction methods.

The review underscores the pivotal function of sustainable materials in mitigating climate change, advancing economic viability, and cultivating social inclusivity within the construction sector, thereby highlighting the necessity of international collaboration to facilitate the shift towards environmentally sound and robust built environments.
