Abstract

The requirements and desires of the Saudi population for community vaccination services were investigated in this research. Concerns, attitudes, and opinions about the pharmacist's role in administering vaccinations were investigated, as well as the expectations of community members regarding the services.

A convenience sample of Saudi community members who frequented Saudi community pharmacies participated in qualitative, in-depth, semi-structured interviews. The interviews were captured on audio, verbatim transcribed, and then translated. NVivo (QSR International) software was then used to evaluate and thematically arrange the collected data. For this research, 20 interviews were done in total. Three main categories pertaining to the community pharmacy vaccination service were formed from the seven topics that surfaced from the interviews: (1) community needs for the service; (2) community expectations of the service; and (3) community concerns and beliefs about the service. In order to increase their vaccine uptake and the overall health of the community, participants indicated their desire for such services and acceptability of immunizations administered by community pharmacists. Some participants, however, had concerns over the expense of the vaccination program, the absence of a private setting for administering the service, the lack of female community pharmacists, and the existing level of competence and experience of community pharmacists in delivering immunization. Some participants supported Saudization of community pharmacy employees and Ministry of Health (MOH) oversight of such services.

In addition to outlining the Saudi community's expectations and concerns regarding community pharmacy infrastructure and the proper level of training for community pharmacist-administered immunization, the research findings also clearly showed the need for community pharmacy immunization services.
