Abstract

The success of early-stage investigators depends on effective mentoring, which has been connected to increased mentee productivity, self-efficacy, and job happiness. The National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) aims to offer evidence-based mentorship and professional development programs that highlight the advantages and difficulties of diversity, inclusivity, and culture in mentoring relationships and, more generally, the research workforce to all trainees in the biomedical, behavioural, clinical, and social sciences. This paper's goal is to provide an overview of NRMN's operations and organizational structure.

Highlights: By better aligning expectations, encouraging professional development, maintaining effective communication, addressing equity and inclusion, assessing understanding, fostering independence, and cultivating ethical behavior, NRMN acts as a nationwide training center for mentors and mentees looking to strengthen their relationships. A cadre of NRMN Master Facilitators is fulfilling the increasing demand for training by providing synchronous and asynchronous platforms, as well as in-person training at institutions, regional training, or national events. In addition to other professional development programs, NRMN provides coaching models for grant writing that are tailored to a particular career level. In order to achieve shared diversity objectives, NRMN collaborates with a variety of stakeholders from the NIH-sponsored Diversity Program Consortium (DPC) as well as groups outside the DPC. For mentors and mentees at all levels of professional development, NRMN provides a virtual gateway to the Network and all of its program offerings. MyNRMN, the Guided Virtual Mentorship Program, news, training calendars, videos, and seminars are just a few of the many mentorship experiences and resources that are accessible via NRMNet. NRMN's "Coaches in-Training" programs are addressing sustainability and national scale by preparing more experienced researchers to apply coaching methods across the country. Early career health disparities investigators get rigorous evaluation and coaching from "Shark Tanks," which concentrate on grant writing for junior faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral trainees. Implications: In order to really diversify and reform the biomedical research workforce, partners with a range of viewpoints are enhancing national capability and igniting the institutional changes required. In order to achieve sustainability, scalability, and wider reach, NRMN strives to maximize available resources.
