Abstract

Older persons need to be able to make informed decisions about their health, way of life, and how to deal with diseases. So, programs to increase Health Literacy (HL) are important for giving older persons the tools they need to make decisions that will improve their quality of life. Using the right medications is important for older persons to stay healthy and improve their health. This research sought to determine the most efficacious health literacy programs that influence drug use among older persons. Methods: Methods: A comprehensive review used MEDLINE (PubMed) and EMBASE to uncover interventional studies assessing HL treatments that influence medication usage in older individuals. Results: Three studies met the inclusion criteria. The research demonstrates that HL treatments have beneficial outcomes and may be successfully executed by various healthcare practitioners via customized communication tactics. However, the study highlights a significant lack of high-quality research on HL techniques designed to enhance medication adherence in older persons, especially in light of the rising incidence of chronic conditions and polypharmacy within this demographic. Conclusions: This comprehensive review reveals significant research deficiencies concerning health literacy programs and their effects on medicine use among older persons. Although the studies mentioned show promising results, more thorough study is needed to create specialized HL treatments that help older persons with medication-related problems.
